Night Vision Goggles vs. NV Binoculars | Optics Trade Debates

Welcome to Optics Trade debates. In each episode, we talk about a different topic and try to answer the most common questions we receive about it. Today, we are going to talk about the differences between night vision goggles and night vision binoculars.

The main difference between night vision goggles and binoculars is in the magnification. NV goggles and binoculars are basically the same thing if not accounting for the magnification.

NV goggles have a 1x magnification, and binoculars have a narrower field of view and a higher magnification.

Night vision goggles are used with a head strap, on which the goggles can be mounted. Most goggles include a head strap, but some need to be bought separately. The police and the military usually mount NV goggles on their helmets.

Because of the 1x magnification, NV goggles can be used while running, walking, flying a helicopter…

The interpupillary distance can be set on both types of premium devices but only on affordable goggles and not affordable binoculars.

The main advantage of NV goggles is that they are able to be used like normal eyesight. The main disadvantage is the lack of visible details on long-range observations.

NV binoculars can’t be used on close range but are really good for long-range observations.

The goggles are usually smaller and lighter because they usually have 20mm objective lenses.
