Laser range finding optics have two measuring modes. The ordinary setting measures the distance once when the user presses the button and the device is pointed towards its target. A lot of devices have Scan mode. Scan mode is activated when the user holds the button. When this mode is activated, the optical device continuously measures the distance.
This is really useful for panning because the device gives a reading every second (the frequency depends on the model). It’s also very useful for observing moving targets.
The mode is not a necessity, and its use is mostly up to personal preference and the category of use. It’s a good feature to have but is useful in only really specific situations.
The inclusion is not connected to the price range. It’s all up to the manufacturers. But the time needed for a measurement is. Cheap rangefinding devices take 2 seconds to get a new measurement and the premium products take multiple measurements in a second.

Most of the rangefinders already have this feature, which is indispensable when observing a moving target and instantly determining its distance. The measurement button needs to be held down and the distance measurements are being constantly updated. This is also a very helpful feature when measuring a target at longer range, so you can be absolutely sure that you measure the desired target and not some surrounding because with just once pressing the button, it is much more likely to get errors in measurements. With the scan mode errors like these can be quickly and easily eliminated.
