As the name suggests, floatable binoculars float on water. This trait is important only for marine binoculars.

Marine binoculars need to be robust and waterproof to be suitable for use on the water. Because they’re mostly used in the proximity of water and it’s not unlikely for them to be dropped, it’s quite important that they float.

Most binoculars that are classed as floatable do not float without its floating strap. There are some binoculars that float without accessories but they’re not common.

The floating straps are usually brightly colored so that it’s easy to spot. Floating straps are also sold separately, so we would advise you to to get one if you own marine binoculars that don’t float.

Floatable option is sensible only when using binoculars on the water as there’s a chance they fall into the water and begin to sink. To avoid that most marine binoculars come with a floatable strap, which prevents such accidents. Although rarely, some of them are floatable by themselves.
