Vortex Solo monoculars | Optics Trade Debates

Hello, and welcome to another episode of Optics Trade Debates. We continue with introducing Vortex products and this time we talk about the Vortex Solo monoculars.

These models are all made in China. At the moment 5 models are available: 8×25, 10×25, 8×36, 10×36 and an 8×36 with a reticle (for ranging applications).

Vortex Solo monoculars use a tough rubber armor on the exterior which provides a non-slip grip and can withstand bad weather conditions.

The interior is filled with dry nitrogen gas that prevents fogging in case of a rapid temperature change. All Solo monoculars are fully waterproof.

A feature of these monoculars that separates them from other Vortex monoculars is that they have adjustable eyecups, so you can twist the eyecups in 2 positions and make them suitable for eyeglass wearers. With the ranging model it´s more problematic because it uses a folding rubber eyecup which is difficult to adjust, so once the eyecup is pulled down it immediately jumps back up.

There is one focusing knob on all models. Like with most monoculars, you adjust the focus by turning a knob that is located just before the eyepiece on the body.

The 8×36 model with a reticle is useful for tactical applications, because it has a mil reticle inside, so if you know the target’s size you can calculate how far the target is. In addition, the 8×36 model with a reticle also has a reticle focus ring, so you can focus the image and compensate the reticle.

The price of these monoculars is somewhere between 80–150 €, except for the model with a reticle which is more expensive. For this price range, the 8x magnification models have a decent field of view of approximately 130 m at a distance of 1000 m.
The eye relief of monoculars could be a bit longer. Nevertheless, it is still of adequate length to normally use the monoculars.

The difference between 25-mm models and 36-mm models is that 36-mm models have a utility clip for the belt and 26-mm don´t.

The product includes a carrying case, a carrying strap, a manual and a cleaning cloth.

The biggest advantages of these monoculars are that they are nicely designed, light, small and compact and can fit just about anywhere, even in your pocket, but more importantly – what makes Vortex Solo monoculars so great is that they come with a Vortex VIP warranty.
