Sunshade vs. Killflash/Honeycomb Filter | Optics Trade Debates

Welcome to Optics Trade debates. In each episode, we talk about a different topic and try to answer the most common questions we receive about it. Today, we are going to talk about the differences between a Sunshade and a Killflash filter.

A Killflash is made as a small honeycomb with a bunch of small tubes stacked together. The same effect can be achieved at home with straws. Killflash is commonly referred to as a honeycomb filter.

It serves a very similar purpose as a sunshade, preventing glare. When a scope is used on a bright and sunny day and the target is in a similar direction as the Sun, a lot of unwanted optical problems can occur.

Glare can be prevented with a sunshade or a Killflash.

A sunshade is inserted at the front of the objective bell in front of the lens. It is usually used only on scopes that feature an objective thread. Specific sunshades are made for specific scopes and are generally not interchangeable.

A Killflash is positioned in the same way as a sunshade. It’s much shorter and much more effective. The price is usually higher than with a sunshade. It also prevents reflections of the outside of the lens, which is important in tactical situations.

Sunshades are usually used by sports shooters, while honeycombs are usually used by professionals, like the military and police.

Most Killflashes are priced at 160 € to 200 €, and the sunshades at 40 € to 60 €.
