Hello and welcome to another Optics Trade debates video. As you’ve might have noticed, we have set to take a look at all categories on our webpage. We will try to shed some light on the most interesting topics associated with each category. Today, our focus is on spotting scope bodies.
We previously posted a video on spotting scope eyepieces. As it did then, a separate category for bodies may result in confusion. The fact is that many brands manufacture the eyepieces and the spotting scope bodies available in their sales catalog separately. The idea behind this production process is that their customers can purchase a single spotting scope body but a couple of compatible eyepieces.
To be honest, we never had a customer purchase a spotting scope body without the eyepiece. In fact, most spotting scopes on our webpage already have one included since the scope body on its own is of no use. That is definitely the best and safest choice. Only if the standard set piece fails to satisfy all needs of the user, a purchase of additional ones is suggested. Some users with specific interests may use two or three different eyepieces on a single scope.
Of course, it’s a possible scenario that a customer first purchases a spotting scope with a standard eyepiece included like Nikon EDG Fieldscope 20×85 A VR, for example. After some use, they might realize that an eyepiece with an extended eye relief would work better with their prescription glasses. Now, let’s say that another spotting scope model from the same brand like Nikon Prostaff 5 16-48×60 S catches their fancy. It would only make sense to purchase just the body – since they already own 2 perfectly compatible eyepieces in their arsenal.
There are 3 basic forms of spotting scope bodies. To be specific, these three categories are: straight, angled and extendable.
It makes much more sense to have a single spotting scope body and a few eyepieces to work with. There really isn’t much point in owning more than one body, though.
Note that cross-brand compatibility of spotting scope eyepieces and bodies is a rarity rather than a rule. Each manufacturer uses its own standard of the bayonet system. So don’t expect your Swarovski Eyepiece 25-50x W to be compatible with Nightforce TS-82 Spotter Angled Body.
