Sightron SII riflescopes

Hello and welcome to another episode of Optics Trade Debates. In today’s episode, we take a look at the brand of optics called Sightron. Sightron is a Japanese owned company, headquartered in Youngsville, NC. They have many series of riflescopes in their offer, but today the focus will be on series SII.

Sightron SII is an old rifle scopes series made in the Philippines and currently there are three models available from this series. There used to be a fourth model (6-24×42), but, unfortunately, it was discontinued.

The majority of SII scopes used to have a 4x zoom, 1-inch tube, adjustable objective, which means that the parallax was adjusted on the objective bell, and they were purely intended for sport shooting. Now the models differ much from one another, but they still all have a 1-inch tube.

Sightron SII 3-9×42 model, although old, is a normal hunting scope. The scope now, in 2019, is almost outdated but it offers a great optical performance for an affordable price. Compared to newer hunting scopes, this model is very lightweight and small. It has a 3x zoom factor.

Sightron SII 4-16×42 is a 4x zoom factor scope for sport shooting. They discontinued the Target Dot reticle, so now only the duplex reticle and a bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticle are available. The same goes for the 3-9×42 model.

Sightron SII 36×42 with a fixed power magnification is a very popular model for benchrest shooting. This model is the most popular one of this series. At this price point (under 600 €) it is hard to find a scope that would have such a thin reticle and a capped target turret. The scope also tracks very well and it has 1/8 of MOA clicks (3.5 mm on 100 m). The scope has a simple construction, a bright image for such a high magnification and a Target Dot reticle inside. This model competes against Weaver T36. On the European market, however, Sightron is probably the only one with this kind of model.

A feature that all models in this series offer, is a lockable eyepiece, so when the user turns the eyepiece and sets the correct diopter it can be locked so that it doesn’t move during use. All scopes also have capped turrets.

What is also special on Sightron SII 36×42 and Sightron SII 4-16×42 which have an adjustable parallax on the objective (AO), is that you can precisely adjust the parallax because it has multiple turns.

The series comes with a 10-year warranty and the devices can be serviced by Sightron if anything goes wrong.

The models don’t offer many modern features such as tactical turrets, zero stop, locking functions, but you get a really good optical performance for your money.

Because the scopes are great optically, a lot of people think they can use them for long-range shooting. Because they don’t offer a lot of elevation range, they are not the best choice for such use.
