At first, we have to differentiate between three different types of red dot sights: full tube sights, small tube sights and reflex sights. Only the reflex sights are appropriate for mounting on a pistol, the full tube and small tube sights are too big. Size and weight are very important factors which is why reflex red dot sights are the suitable ones as they are small, compact and light.
For the shooter, the ability to get on the target quick is very important. Because of that, we recommend a bigger red dot size such as 6, 7 or 8 MOA. Smaller red dot sights are suitable for rifles.
The most common choice of red dot sights for pistols are: Shield Sights from Great Britain, Docter (now Noblex) from Germany and C-More from the USA. They all feature a different mount, but all these dots can be mounted on any pistol because aftermarket producers came up with a specific mounting solution for a specific pistol. More or less, you can mount any dot on any pistol, you will find a mounting solution one way or another.
If you are not sure if the dot is OK for a pistol or not, we recommend that you check if manufacturer guarantees that the red dot can withstand the recoil of a pistol. The red dots which are made specifically for pistols have inside parts reinforced and are more suitable to withstand the pistol recoil. The other models are more suitable for rifles and other applications.
