Both elevation and windage can be locked on turrets that have a locking feature. The locking feature prevents accidental movements of the turrets.
Some turrets have a locking function only on zero, but the majority can be locked on any setting.
It is used in tactical situations where there are a lot of opportunities for the turret to turn. Turrets with a locking function are used by the military, the police, sports shooters…
Locking turrets are also used by hunters. They need it when they’re stalking, hunting in the mountains… in regards to hunting, it is mostly used on modern BDC hunting turrets.
Locking turrets are found on premium, high-quality tactical scopes with exposed turrets and on premium high-quality hunting scopes with BDC turrets.
The majority of target scopes don’t have a locking function.
There are some „hybrids“ like some Kahles scopes that have a twist guard. Conventional locking turrets can be accidentally broken in hectic situations if the user overforces them. That is not possible with twist guards, because they are always able to move.
The locking function is usually enabled when a turret is pulled out or pushed down.
