Leica Geovid R Series | Optics Trade Debates

Hello and welcome to another Optics Trade Debates video. Here, at Optics Trade, we are still moving through Leica’s impressive sales catalog. Today’s video will focus on the first model family of Leica laser rangefinding binoculars – Leica Geovid R. Let’s begin.

In 1992, Leica was the first company to introduce laser rangefinding binoculars to the civilian market.

The first Geovid R model was introduced in 2005 and was only able to calculate the linear distance. In 2009, the second generation followed: These models also provided the linear distance but with better quality of optical performance.

Geovid R models are known for their classic design and do not feature the Perger-Porro prism of the later Geovid HD-R and HD-B model families. Instead, they have the Schmidt-Pechan (Roof) type of prism.

The newest models belong to the third generation, released in 2016. It’s the first Geovid R model able to measure the equivalent horizontal range, so it also takes into account the angle. The range of detection is approximately 1,200 metres.

Let’s talk about the models available in the Geovid R series. There are 4 options, the 42-millimetre models can be purchased with 2 magnification powers (8×42 and 10×42). The bigger, 56-millimetre ones also offer a choice between 8×56 and the quite unusual 15×56.

Due to the high magnification power of the 15×56 model, it is advisable to use it with a tripod. Interestingly though, the model is not too bulky or heavy considering its abilities.

All Geovid R binoculars feature diopter compensation on both eyes. The side marked with a white line is used for diopter compensation of the image, while the other with a red line denotes where the same can be done for the display,

This series has twist-up eyecups with a couple of different settings.

Leica Geovid R offer decent performance and are quite affordable. They are priced at between 1,500 and 2,000 euros – depending on the model.

Now, there are many manufacturers of LRF binoculars that sell similarly priced devices. But purchasing a Leica product is something else completely, thanks to the reputability and technological prowess of the brand.

Perhaps the budget-friendly price can be explained by the long history of the Geovid brand, since the first models were created in 2003. Leica continues to update the technology, while the classic form design has remained mostly the same.

Leica products always come with plenty of quality accessories enclosed in the box with the product. With Geovid R binoculars, the customer also receives additional items like a carrying strap, lens covers and a cleaning cloth.

When installing the battery and removing its compartment cover, the user should always use the authorised Leica tool that comes as a part of the package. Using a coin will most likely damage the cover and it’s not guaranteed to successfully open it up, anyway.

These Leica products are manufactured in Portugal. The brand’s new factory there uses only state-of-the-art technology. All Geovid R binoculars have a 5-year warranty. Note that Leica will continue to take the product back for repairs even after the warranty runs out.
