Docter Red Dot Sights | Optics Trade Debates

Welcome to Optics Trade debates. In each episode, we talk about a different topic and try to answer the most common questions we receive about it. Today, we are going to talk about Docter Red Dot Sights.

We think that Docter is the market leader in this segment. The choice of the size of the dot depends on what kind of shooting the buyer is going to use it for.. For long distance shooting, we advise the use of a 3.5 MOA dot which is most commonly used on rifles. For short distance shooting, up to 30 m, we recommend a 7 MOA dot which is bigger and better for pistols.

Some changes have been made in the last years in the current line up of all the Docter sights. The products are: Docter sight 2+, Docter sight 2+ IPSC, Docter Sight C, Docter Sight 3 and Docter QUICKsight. 2+ is the previous generation made out of 2 pieces with aluminum housing. The IPSC model is an upgraded version of the 2+ made for pistols. Its internal parts are strengthened to better withstand the recoil of a pistol. Docter sight C is basically a 2+ with electronics from the Docter 3 series. Very similar to the C is the Docter 3 series which offers the possibility to adjust the illumination intensity according to the ambient light. QUICKsight is for shotguns and it comes with an integrated mount.

The Docter mount is industry standard, 80% of the industry is using this mount. There is a standard mounting solution and because of that, mounts are easy to install. Beside this mount, there are two other main groups of the mounts on the market: C-more and Shield each have their own standard of mounts. SigSauer is also producing mounts. They are very similar to the Docter mounts but have a couple of very small differences.

Waterproofness can be achieved by using a special gasket between the adapter and the red dot sight during the mounting. When the battery runs out and you have to change it, you will also need to change the gasket.

Docter Sight 2+, IPSC and 3 are using an almost identical cover which is why the covers are interchangeable between them. However, if we, for example, use Docter Sight 2+‘s cover on Docter sight 3, we will not be able to change the ambient light intensity since the cover lacks the magnet which is necessary to perform that action.

All other models use different kinds of covers made out of rubber.

You can use red dots with both eyes open. Some operate on 1x magnification, others a little bit above that. Several sources claim that a magnification a little bit above 1x makes it even easier for the user to look through with both eyes open.
